David Harvey-Bowen - Class of 1998

David Harvey-Bowen - Class of 1998

David was one of the most outstanding football players in school history. The Saints had just begun a football program in the early 1990’s and David was a pioneer who helped put the Saints on the map. He got the call to varsity as only a sophomore and was named the team’s defensive MVP that year. In 1996, he became a ferocious offensive threat and had a 95-yard touchdown run in 1996 which was a school record for longest TD from scrimmage. In 1997, he really busted out a huge year. In this season, he set several school records including most touchdowns rushing with 21, most rushing yards in one season with 1,408, and most rushing yards in one game with 308. In that 308-yard game, he played in only 3 of the 4 quarters. He rushed for 4 of these touchdowns in the sectional semi-final game against Penfield which helped lead our Saints football team to our 1st ever Section V championship game. He was named the offensive MVP of this championship game. He was named 1st team All-County in 1996 and 1997 and in 1997, was named Monroe County Division 2 Player of the Year, 1st team AGR, was selected to play in the Governors Bowl All-Star game, and was named to the Golden Fifty All-State Football team. He was the 1st football player from Churchville-Chili to ever accomplish this. His success was also seen in the weight room. He was an extremely accomplished weightlifter who set many records. He was the 1996 National Junior Olympic weightlifting champion where he set 3 national records and was also the 1997 National powerlifting champion where he set another 3 national records and 1 world record in the squat. As a high school student, he was able to bench press 445, squat 725, power clean 412, and deadlift 710. His impressive ability led him to be named 1998 Bigger Faster Stronger National Athlete of the Year. All of this led him to receive a scholarship to Division 1 Western Kentucky.

Outside of school, she also was chosen to participate in the Empire State Games in soccer where she won a silver medal in 1979 and 1980, and a gold medal in 1981. Paul A. Setter - Coach

Paul A. Setter - Coach

Coach Setter is the very first coach to be inducted into our Hall of Fame. After graduating from St. Lawrence University, SUNY Brockport, and serving 2 years in the US Navy, Coach Setter worked here as a teacher, coach and guidance counselor for 28 years. During that time, he coached our varsity baseball team for 6 years from 1962-67 and our boys’ soccer team for 14 years from 1961-74. During this time, he won 2 Monroe County titles in baseball, and in soccer he won 3 more Monroe County titles and also 3 Section V titles. There are only 3 coaches in Churchville-Chili history who have won 3 or more Section V titles in any sport. Coach Setter is one of them. To this day, he has the most wins for a coach in boys’ soccer school history with 125 wins. His overall win-loss record was 125-71-24 in soccer, which is an extremely impressive .623 winning percentage. We have only a few other coaches in school history who have accrued a higher winning percentage than that, but none of them coached as many years as Coach Setter did. He was a highly respected coach around Section V which led him to be inducted into Section V Boys Soccer Hall of Fame. He was also very active in officiating both soccer and basketball at the high school and college level.

Bernie Voorheis – Class of 1939. Post Graduate 1940

Bernie Voorheis – Class of 1939. Post Graduate 1940

Bernie is one of only a handful of athletes in school history to play sports at the professional level. Bernie Voorheis was a member of the Churchville Class of 1939 and was a postgraduate in 1940. He was one of the leading scorers on our varsity basketball team over his 3-year varsity career. He was the team captain of our 1939-40 basketball team that won the Monroe County title and lost in the Section V Class B finals 20-19 to Cuba. This team finished 15-4 and Bernie was named to the Monroe County Basketball All-Star team and to the All-Section V Class B team. After graduation he went on to Cornell University and began his professional basketball career in the semi pro leagues in 1944 as a member of the Atlas Wreckers in the New York Penn Basketball league. The following season in 1945-46, Bernie played professional basketball for the Rochester Royals. This was the first year of the franchise and was coached by Basketball Hall of Famer Les Harrison. Amazingly, this team won the National Basketball League championship that year. So not only did this inductee play professional basketball, he won a championship! Some of his teammates also ended up in the Basketball Hall of Fame including Al Cervi, Bobby Davies, and Red Holtzman. Another teammate, who was also Bernie’s roommate, was Otto Graham who ended up making the professional Football Hall of Fame. What an amazing group he was part of. Following his playing days, he had a long career at Kodak as a leader in their recreation department helping lead employees in competitive recreational sports. He coached varsity basketball at Bryon Bergen and served the Spencerport community for many years in their recreation department.
